1in8b Life Game – A Random Birth, A Lifetime of Choices

1 in 8 Billion is a free beta life simulation that runs in the browser. It starts from a simple question about chance: if you were born now, where would that life begin, and what conditions would surround it? Each run creates a new person and follows that life from birth to its end. The country model uses statistics from 141 countries. The public country reference lists each country’s share of births, life expectancy, under-five mortality and income adjusted for purchasing power, and it cites UN World Population Prospects 2024. The simulation uses these figures to shape a life; it is not a forecast of what will happen to any real person. Duration presets set the pace. They are about 30 minutes, one hour and one-and-a-half hours to reach the selected country’s life expectancy. At the one-hour preset, a year passes in roughly 40–60 seconds. A life can end at a different age, and pausing or speeding up changes how long you spend with it. The game is intended for ages 15 and above. It includes death, illness, poverty and war, shown without detailed depictions. Its reflective pauses, yearly choices and memorials help it work as a simulation of circumstances and consequences rather than a race to one universal ending.

Click Play Now above to open the official game. On the start screen, choose the world you want to explore: the past, today, the future or any world. You can leave the other settings as they are. Select a duration preset, then press Be born to begin at age zero. The country and family you are born into are drawn for you. The Babies born now option weights the country draw by annual births, while The 8 billion alive now option weights it by population. Neither option lets you pick a country directly; they only change how the birthplace is sampled. In both cases, the life begins in infancy. Follow the person as the years pass. Choose a yearly focus, then respond when decisions appear about school, employment, relationships, moving abroad or medical care. Your choices shape the life, while country statistics set limits on the opportunities available, so pay attention to your character’s circumstances rather than expecting every life to follow the same route. Use the time controls to pause when a decision appears or to move faster through quieter years. If you would rather watch, turn on Auto mode in the top bar; on phones, find it in the three-dot menu. The simulation also pauses for reflection at ages 5, 15, 30, 50 and 70, giving you a moment to consider the life so far. Use Continue to resume a life in the same browser and on the same device. Past lives are kept there too. A new phone or browser will not automatically show the same history, so use Move my lives when you need to transfer lives. When a life ends, its memorial and sharing features let you look back on the person you followed.

Birth Settings, Pacing & Saved Lives

Where can I play the 1in8b life game?

Click Play Now above to open the official English-language game. Choose your starting settings there and select Be born.

Can I choose my character’s country?

The birthplace is randomized. The start screen offers birth-weighted or population-weighted country sampling, but it does not let you choose a destination country. Either option begins the new person’s life at age zero.

How long should I set aside for a life?

The presets are about 30 minutes, one hour or one-and-a-half hours to reach the country’s life expectancy. The actual lifespan and your use of pause or faster time can change the session length.

Will my lives appear automatically on another device?

Lives are stored in the browser and device you used. Continue resumes them there, but a new phone or browser does not automatically show the same lives. Use Move my lives when you want to transfer your history.

Can I watch without making every decision?

Yes. Enable Auto mode in the top bar, or in the three-dot menu on phones. It lets you follow a simulated life without choosing every yearly action yourself.

Who is this experience intended for?

The game describes its audience as ages 15 and up. It includes difficult subjects such as death, illness, poverty and conflict, presented without detailed depictions.
